SUMMARY:ResoLex Roundtable: Negotiating with armed groups\, game theory and the prisoners’ dilemma. What’s that got to do with the major projects industry?
DESCRIPTION:In addition to being the Chief Executive of ResoLex\, Edward Moore is the Chairman of Concordis International\, a peacebuilding charity. Concordis uses a dialogue approach to support the development of sustainable relationships amongst communities involved in or affected by armed conflict. At first light\, this may seem rather unconnected to the development of collaborative relationships in the commercial world\, yet there may be lessons to learn and adopt from the tools\, techniques and experiences gained in conflict zones. \nOn the 9th of July\, Peter Marsden Chief Executive of Concordis International is joining us to highlight the lessons we as an industry can learn from the third sector\, in building relationships and resilience in complex environments\, as we all work to create sustainable collaborative relationships. \nNote: Please check your junk folder if you have not received your email confirmation. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					Guest speaker: Peter Marsden\n					Chief Executive\, Concordis international \n					Peter is Chief Executive of the peacebuilding charity\, Concordis International\, and is a mediator and a former child protection lawyer. \nHe’s responsible for Concordis’ work in Central African Republic\, Chad\, Cameroon\, Mauritania\, Sudan and South Sudan\, helping women and men affected by armed conflict to find workable solutions to root causes of their grievances. \nPeter’s passion is to bring people together who would not normally meet\, helping them to transform destructive conflict into a future-focused collaboration\, to their mutual benefit.  The Concordis team seeks to change incentives where conflict is fought and felt\, increasing the economic and social benefits of peaceful coexistence\, whilst also increasing the disincentives to violence. \nMuch of this work involves training local peacebuilders from across the conflict divides – who better to do this work than those who know intimately the history\, politics and culture; people who will be part of these communities long after Concordis has left? \nPeter left legal practice in 2007 and took a Masters in International Development at the LSE.  He then served for three years as Director of the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East.  He organised peace talks in Iraq and Lebanon between high-level Iraqi religious leaders from across the sectarian divides\, resulting in a joint Sunni-Shia fatwa against suicide bombing. \nWhen he’s not working\, Peter would prefer to be in the hills\, running\, climbing\, skiing or cycling.

She qualified as a solicitor in 1994 and became a Partner in 1997. \nRoseanne has spent her entire career advising the Government and wider public sector in delivering complex\, major and strategic projects. This covers both economic infrastructure in transport and environment as well as social infrastructure in communications\, hospitals and education. \nRos is a public law\, construction\, contract and procurement specialist. \nIn addition to the law itself\, she provides commercial\, and strategic services including commercial plans\, procurement strategies and stakeholder management. \nRoseanne is in an expert in the following areas of law:\n• Procurement law;\n• Contracts and commercial\, including payment mechanisms;\n• Public law\, including powers\, decision making and governance;\n• Construction contracts (all forms\, and a leading expert in NEC suite);\n• Waste law\n• ICT and telecoms software and licensing\n• Risk management \nRoseanne deals with PFI/PF2/PPP and construction contracts (NEC\, PSC\, JCT\, FIDIC\, ICE). Roseanne advises on the law of security\, including terms within the insurance and bond market. She leads workshops on evaluation and risk modelling and leads stakeholder discussions.

DESCRIPTION:In February 2018\, Professor David Mosey introduced the\, then new\, FAC1 – Framework Alliance contract at our ResoLex Roundtable\, describing its intent and ambition. David was formerly head of Projects and Construction at law firm Trowers & Hamlins from 1991 to 2013. \nDavid was appointed by the UK Government in 2021 to lead an “Independent Review of Public Sector Construction Frameworks” His recommendations for improving value\, improving safety\, managing risk and achieving net zero carbon are set out in “Constructing the Gold Standard” and were endorsed by Government and industry in the 2022 “Construction Playbook”. David also co-authored “Guidance on Collaborative Procurement for Design and Construction to Support Building Safety”\, working with Russell Poynter-Brown and a Task Group drawn from CIoB\, CIPS\, RIBA\, RICS and others to demonstrate how collaborative systems such as balanced evaluation\, early supply chain involvement\, multi-party contracts and BIM are essential to avoid another Grenfell Tower disaster. This guidance was published in January 2022 by the Department for Levelling Up Housing and Communities and was also endorsed in the 2022 “Construction Playbook”. \nDavid received the 2021 TECSA Clare Edwards Award for “professional excellence and an outstanding contribution to the legal profession serving the construction and infrastructure industry”. He is principal author of the “PPC2000” collaborative contract and the “FAC-1” and “TAC-1” alliance contracts\, adopted on procurements worth over £100 billion\, and he was awarded a CBE in the 2023 New Year Honours List for “services to the construction industry”.

DESCRIPTION:Team mobilisation is often seen as a half-day activity to generate a behavioural charter that becomes a poster on the meeting room wall and is then largely ignored for the rest of the contract. DESCRIPTION:The construction industry must embrace new approaches for mega projects\, but the requirement is even greater when delivering giga projects. The scale of these complex programme environments offer the opportunity to experiment with new practices and ideas to tackle even more complex challenges. However\, the significance of behaviours is often overlooked. \nWe see major projects comprising of three interlinked competencies; technical\, commercial and behavioural. Many project teams put resource into managing the first two competencies but the behavioural challenges are equally important and we believe they are inextricably linked to project performance. For example\, we must navigate complicated interfaces\, and manage cultural diversity and different ways of working – addressing these challenges is even more pressing on larger projects. \nThe question is\, how can we effectively manage these issues as the project scale increases? \nWe are pleased to announce that three exceptional speakers from Jacobs will be joining us for our next roundtable. SUMMARY:ResoLex Roundtable: The Private Sector Playbook
DESCRIPTION:The Construction Playbook\, published back in 2020\, set the tone for how we can transform the productivity of the sector by changing the way that major projects and programmes are assessed\, procured\, and delivered. Taking their cue from the report\, private sector organisations have since come together to develop ‘Trust and Productivity – The Private Sector Playbook’. This brings client and delivery organisations together in a unique way to address ways of working outlined by the Construction Playbook and demonstrate how implementing a different approach can lead to more productive projects and better outcomes. \nTrust and Productivity could be a catalyst for change in the industry if adopted by clients\, contractors\, and others within the private sector supply chain. The question is\, how do we shift from one way of working to another? How can we create the right environment to enable a shift in mindset and leave behind the more traditional behaviours that are currently embedded in our delivery teams? \nTo explore these questions further\, we are delighted to be joined by Alison Cox\, Managing Director of Sir Robert McAlpine’s London business unit and contributor to the Private Sector Playbook and Charles Horne\, Project Director at British Land and lead on the Broadgate Framework – an exemplar project used as a case study in the playbook. Our speakers join us with a wealth of experience in varied delivery environments and each has a unique perspective on the outcome of the Broadgate Framework as contractor and client respectively. SUMMARY:Rail Forum's Infrastructure Collaboration - A route to success
DESCRIPTION:A Rail Forum event:\n‘Collaboration’ has become a bit of a buzzword in rail in recent times. But what does it mean for the supply chain\, why is it important and how can we ensure it works for everyone? \nCollaboration can take many forms – from establishing a formal joint venture (JV) company to a simple handshake in the pub! How do you decide what’s the best approach for your business and what are the risks and benefits attached to that approach? \nClients are now consistently citing the importance of collaboration in delivering the best value for them and their funders and the increased presence of JVs in the market demonstrates that in some areas at least the supply chain has responded to this. In addition\, Network Rail has expressed a need for ‘thinner supply chains’ moving forward with more responsibility being placed on their tier ones. This means that EFFECTIVE collaboration between tier one companies and the wider supply chain including SMEs will become even more important. \nFor collaboration to work it must be a win-win for all parties involved. This event aims to be as ‘three-dimensional’ as possible discussing more widely what ‘collaboration’ means/might entail for members moving forward. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Transferable skills transforming delivery
DESCRIPTION:The ongoing skills shortage is an issue that is widespread and impacting every discipline\, especially in the delivery of construction and infrastructure projects across the UK. Many of the contributing factors are outside of the control of project professionals\, (such as an ageing workforce with few new entrants) though significant efforts are being put forward to respond to these factors including coordinated industry efforts to attract young people into apprenticeships and early starter programmes.  \nThis is one aspect of the approach to resolving the challenge\, however\, we want to look at it from a different perspective – as the rate of change in skills requirements accelerates\, how can we build flexibility into our teams to meet those challenges? What do those transferable skills look like in practice and how are they key to delivering within a complex environment? \nJoin us on Tuesday 11th October for a roundtable discussion exploring these themes further! We are delighted to have Rose McArthur\, Director for Transport and Highways at Cheshire West and Chester Council join us and share some of her experience in developing and applying those transferable skills on her career journey from a primarily technical role to using a broad set of skills to lead a diverse infrastructure portfolio.  \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					Speaker: Rose McArthur\n					Director for Transport and Highways \n					Rose has over 20 years of experience delivering strategic transport programmes across the globe. She joined Cheshire West and Chester Council in 2021 from Mott MacDonald where she was a Technical Director. She has delivered projects that include the transport strategy behind the last two Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Gold Coast as well as the movement strategy behind the build of the Sydney Light Rail and Melbourne Metro. She has worked as a strategic advisor to the DfT engaging with all 79 Local Transport Authorities across England to develop their covid recovery strategies for transport. \nShe was heavily involved in the surface access strategy development for Heathrow airport. As the new Director for Transport and Highways\, she manages a hugely diverse portfolio that includes Strategic Transport\, Transport Commissioning\, Public Transport\, Active Travel\, Flooding\, Highways and Fleet amongst many other areas\, developing teams who work hard to deliver what it takes to keep Cheshire West moving.

DESCRIPTION:NOTE: DATE CHANGED – Sorry for any inconvenience but we have changed the date from the 21st June to the 30th June to avoid the tube strike.  \nIn December 2020\, the Government released ‘The Construction Playbook’ in a bid to transform how major projects and programmes are assessed\, procured\, and delivered. The Playbook provides some clear approaches to what we need to do\, though it doesn’t explain how to achieve behavioural change. In our complimentary report\, ‘Changing Behaviours in Construction: A complement to the Construction Playbook’\, we have considered the cultural and behavioural changes needed to enable this transformation of the industry.
